Anti-social behaviour (ASB) week
This week we’re backing #ASBAwarenessWeek, a national campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB) and help keep you safe.
Everyone deserves to feel safe where they live and ASB in your community can really affect your overall health, wellbeing, and quality of life. It’s unacceptable behaviour that comes in many forms such as:
- playing music too loud
- litter and dumping rubbish (fly tipping)
- graffiti and vandalism
- criminal damage
- assault
- racist or homophobic abuse
- drug taking
- threatening or swearing at neighbours
Your new Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) team, work closely in partnership with the council’s Safer Neighbourhood Service and South Yorkshire Police to deal with ASB effectively across the borough. We address and manage community tensions that ASB, crime and nuisance can cause so that tenants can live in their homes without stress and fear. ASB is a breach of tenancy, we will always act proportionately and be guided by the harm in resolving the issues, which could include possession proceedings.
If you’re suffering from ASB, the first thing you should do is discuss the problem with your neighbour. We can offer a mediation service, where we arrange for a trained person to help you and your neighbour meet, talk about your problems and help you understand each other’s point of view. If you can’t talk to your neighbour about the problem or it’s a sensitive problem then you can report ASB by completing our online form.
If you experience a problem that you think is a crime, contact South Yorkshire Police as soon as possible and then contact our ASB team to let us know about the problem on 01226 787878. To contact the South Yorkshire Police for:
- An emergency, such as a violent attack on 999.
- Non-emergency calls on 101.

Four Million Homes have recently held a really ASB webinar which you can check out here. It’s really engaging with speakers from across the UK sharing their views and experiences of ASB. You can view the webinar on the website here.
Safer Barnsley are currently asking everyone for their views on crime and ASB. You can do this by completing their quick online survey online here. Your views will help to shape the next set of plans and priorities in making our borough safer.
